The Dogs: Jewel

Jewel

Leader in training

3 year old

Female

Alaskan Husky

Jewel is one of the Deadwood pups. She completed the Serum Run Expedition in 2011 and is now a leader in training. Jewel shows great promise.

Training Run: 2/22/11

Date: February 22, 2011

Distance: 5 miles. 30 minutes

Weather: 18 degrees and clear

Equipment: Sled

Trail Conditions: hard packed

Dog Positions: 12 dog team. ZakKatya, Princeton-Rapel, Dale-Poppy, Lilly-Cedar, Coyote-Mojo, Birch-Ruger

Music Choice: Shuffle

Notes: This was a quick run around Frying Pan lake with the “old guys”. We dont run these guys but just a couple times a week. Most of these guys are retired but they still love to pull even though they cant do it like they used to. You still see a spark in their eyes, a tight tug and the happiness to be a part of a team. It is great!

Training Run: 2/21/11

Date: February 21, 2011

Distance: 15 miles. 1 hour 20 minutes

Weather: 21 degrees and windy

Equipment: Sled

Trail Conditions: hard packed

Dog Positions: 12 dog team. ZakKatya, SwidegonWu, R2-Drifter, Scoter-Ellsworth Eddy-Rabbit, ZamboniePiglet

Music Choice: White Zombie

Notes: Good run! This was the team of “misfits” that were left behind after the dogs were chosen for the Serum Run. What am I saying, these are great dogs! We ran the Lost Lady, Windy Lake and Frying Pan Lake trails. People have put in a lot of other trails since I have been on Lost Lady but I just let Zak and Katya guide the way. The dogs did very good and it was good to be back into the routine of the daily training.

I look forward to running the dogs that are in the kennel over the next few weeks and these guys when they return!

Training Run: 2/15/11

Date: February 15, 2011

Distance: 20 miles. 1 hour 28 minutes

Weather: 9 degrees and clear blue skies

Equipment: Sled

Trail Conditions: hard packed

Dog Positions: 12 dog team. Magpie-Goose, Eddy-Katya, Snap-Sophia, Sparrow-Shrike, Widegon-Jane, Shifter-Chickadee

Music Choice: Godsmack

Notes: Good run! This was the last before before the dogs head out for 2 1/2 weeks on the Serum Run with my kennel partner. I hope she and the dogs do well and have a great time! I think the dogs are in condition and have over 1600 miles on them since mid-September. We went through a bit of a mental funk over the past few weeks but I think we worked through it.

I look forward to running the dogs that are in the kennel over the next few weeks and these guys when they return!
